The Investment

What is the typical range of investment for a finished masterpiece?

Legacy Starter Collection prints begin at $2,000 for an 8 × 10-inch size. Statement Pieces for larger spaces begin at $20,000 for a 40-inch print and reach $110,000 for a 120-inch museum-grade portrait. Frames and custom lighting are additional. During the Legacy Design Consultation, the studio guides the selection of the appropriate scale for the intended space. Our Investment and Pricing page is here.

How does your commission fee work, and what is included?

Each legacy portrait commission includes the full Legacy Design & Consultation, the private in-person sitting, and the Projection Session to finalize the finished work. Full pricing for prints, frames, and lighting is reviewed in person at the start of the project. Payment is made in full before work begins, following the tradition of fine art patronage.

Do you offer payment plans or financing for commissions?

No. All commissions are paid in full upfront. This establishes a clear partnership between patron and artist and allows the studio to focus entirely on the creation of the portrait without administrative interruptions.

Do I get a digital file of my portrait?

For commissions 24 × 30 inches or larger, a web-resolution digital file is provided at no additional cost for personal archiving and social sharing. High-resolution files for home printing are not released; the studio manages all printing and finishing to guarantee museum-grade quality and archival permanence.

The Experience

Can I send you a photo to turn into a portrait?

No. Every Kevin G. Saunders portrait begins with a dedicated in-person sitting. The shared studio experience is essential to capturing the subject’s true presence, character, and essence; elements that cannot be replicated from a photograph.

I’m not comfortable in front of a camera. How do you help subjects feel at ease?

The process is deliberately unhurried. A traditional view camera and large-screen preview allow a slower, more conversational pace. The focus remains on connection rather than equipment, helping the subject relax so their authentic personality emerges naturally.

What if my children don’t cooperate during a family session?

Family sessions are scheduled for 2½ hours, with no pressure to achieve perfect poses. The goal is to capture genuine connection and family character. Solo or couple portraits are often created as backstops. Solo sessions for children under six are not offered as the primary focus, as the methodical nature of the work requires sustained attention.

Do you provide guidance on wardrobe, hair, and makeup?

Yes. The Legacy Design Consultation includes detailed guidance on timeless wardrobe choices. For Statement Piece commissions 50 inches or larger, complimentary on-site hair and makeup services are provided through studio partners. A style guide reference is also available.

How long does a session last?

Solo or couple sessions are scheduled for 2½ hours. Family sessions are also booked for 2½ hours to maintain a relaxed pace. Red Carpet commissions may require additional time for multiple looks and styling.

The Final Heirloom

What is the archival quality of your portraits? How long will they last?

Every portrait meets museum standards and is built for centuries of display. Archival-grade canvases and papers are protected with a hand-applied archival coating that eliminates the need for glass while ensuring 200+ years of permanence.

Do you assist with the final installation of the portrait in our home?

Yes. White-glove installation is part of the artistic process of a major portrait commission. KGS Studios ensures the finished portrait is hung and lit to command its intended space and presence in the home.

How are the canvas portraits finished, and can I customize the final texture?

Each museum-quality canvas portrait is sealed with a hand-rolled archival coating. For commissions 24 × 30 inches or larger, artist Toni Saunders applies a complementary hand-brushed finish using archival gel that follows the portrait’s details, creating a rich, textured surface reminiscent of traditional oil painting. Clients may choose a smooth modern surface or the classic hand-brushed texture.

Why do you only display a curated selection of portraits in your online gallery?

As a private atelier, the studio maintains a strict Discretion-by-Default policy. Many masterworks are intimate family legacies intended as private heirlooms rather than public displays. Only those with explicit written permission from the subject are shared. Learn more about our Discretion Policy here.

What makes a Kevin G. Saunders portrait a true heirloom-quality asset?

Each portrait is created through hand-guided artistry with no automation or algorithmic assistance. The result is a physical work of verifiable provenance, museum-grade materials, and 200+ year archival permanence; qualities that position it as a strategic legacy holding rather than a decorative object.

How does the private atelier experience differ from typical portrait photography?

The process is deliberate and unhurried. A dedicated in-person sitting, view-camera capture, and manual refinement produce a commanding physical presence that cannot be achieved through digital photography. The finished work becomes an authoritative visual record of the subject at a specific moment in time.

Can interior designers and architects specify KGS Studios portraits for client projects?

Yes. The Trade Program provides verified design professionals with full retail transparency, confidential professional terms, and direct collaboration with the artist for client projects.

What is the typical timeline for a completed portrait commission?

From initial consultation to final installation, the process is measured in weeks rather than days, reflecting the meticulous hand-guided creation required for museum-grade work. All work is customContact us if you have a specific deadline to meet.
