A Guide to
Commissioning Your Legacy

Investing in a significant work of art is a considered decision. This guide is designed to demystify the process, answer your most important questions, and provide a clear framework for planning your family’s next heirloom.

Solving the First Problem:
The Myth of the “Big, Empty Wall”

A gallery wall at KGS Studios featuring a large family Statement Piece, a portrait of a German Shepherd, and a black and white portrait of a man.
For scale, the German Shepherd portrait (a 24″ x 30″ print in a 5″ frame) is displayed on a 36-inch-wide wall.

The first thing nearly every new client says upon entering the studio is, “I love this, but I just don’t have the wall space.” My response is always the same: what would you do if you were given an original Rembrandt? You would make room.

The real question is: is your legacy worth making room for? A true legacy portrait is not mere decoration that must fit a pre-existing space. It is a new center of gravity for your home. It creates its own space. Our collaborative process is designed to help you anticipate this powerful addition and plan for its perfect placement.

This also highlights a key secret of fine art placement: a portrait’s true impact is determined by its viewing distance. A powerful 30×40 piece in an intimate study can command as much presence as a grander portrait viewed from across a large room. A critical part of our design process is helping you master this relationship between scale, perspective, and emotional power.

Understanding Scale & Impact:
The Power of Presence

The emotional impact of a portrait is determined not by its frame, but by the size of the subject’s face within it. A face the size of a fist feels distant; a face the size of your extended hand feels present, almost alive. This is the secret to a “life-size” presence that commands a room. Many photographers use tight crops, creating large faces on small prints that cannot be scaled up. Our process is different. We compose for the full figure, a far more challenging discipline that allows us to create true “Statement Pieces” at any scale.

The Investment Levels

The Signature Collection: Statement Pieces

The investment for your Statement Piece is based on its longest dimension. During your design consultation in our private projection room, we will work together to determine the final aspect ratio that best serves the portrait. This collaborative process ensures the composition and bespoke framing are perfectly tailored to your unique work of art.

Additionally, all commissions for Statement Pieces 50 inches and larger include complimentary on-site hair and makeup services from our trusted partners at Jax Studio to ensure a seamless, professional experience.

The Art of the Finish: Embellishment, Framing & Lighting

A Choice of Texture for Color Portraits

For color portraits 24×30 and larger, you have the choice of two distinct surface finishes. Many collectors prefer the pure, textured surface of the archival canvas itself. For those seeking the presence of a classical painting, we offer a meticulous, hand-applied brushstroke embellishment by artist Toni Saunders, which adds a unique, tactile dimension to the work.

A Commitment to Clarity: Framing Without Glass

All our portraits, regardless of finish, are protected by a durable archival coating that eliminates the need for glass. We believe the weight, cost, and distracting reflections of glass detract from the artwork’s intimate presence. Your heirloom is presented with absolute clarity, allowing an unfiltered connection to the art, just as it would be in a museum.

Professional Presentation

To complete your heirloom, a traditional, hand-lettered, 22-karat gold leaf nameplate and a classic incandescent frame light are included with our compliments for all commissions 24×30 and larger.

For the ultimate museum-quality presentation, we also offer a bespoke LED lighting solution. After your portrait is complete, we work with a specialist who custom-paints the light housing to perfectly match your frame and aims the individual lenses to evenly illuminate your masterpiece with no heat or UV damage. This represents the pinnacle of fine art presentation and can be discussed during your consultation.

Our Commitment to Transparency

To maintain clarity, the investment for the print is established first. Bespoke framing is a collaborative part of the design process. A complete and detailed framing price list is reviewed with you at the start of every consultation to ensure full transparency. There are no hidden costs or surprises—only a clear, collaborative path to your finished masterpiece.
