Frequently Asked Questions

Can you come to my city and create a portrait?

Yes. We are marketing our Signature Portraits across the US and around the world and have contracts with rental studios in major cities. We can come to your city for significant commissions, saving you time. Because of the costs involved, we cannot do this for in-kind charity donations unless they are grouped with other commissioned sessions. Please contact us for more details.

Can I send a photo for you to turn into a portrait?

Respectfully, no. All our portraits begin with a collaborative sitting, either in our San Antonio studio or at a location we travel to.

You use “hot lights.” Are they really hot?

We do use continuous lighting in the style of vintage movie lights for our black and white work. However, our lights have been upgraded to modern LED bulbs which are cool and comfortable for our subjects.

Why do you use that large view camera?

The view camera is an essential part of our deliberate, artistic process, following in the tradition of masters like Karsh and Stieglitz. It forces a slower, more thoughtful approach that allows us to focus on connecting with you, not just the technology.

How long does a session last?

For solo or couple’s portraits, plan on around 90 minutes, families take longer, so we book a 2 1/2 hour session for all. “Red Carpet” sessions take longer to accommodate hair/makeup requirements and multiple looks.

Do I get a digital file of my portrait?

For commissions 24×30″ and larger, a web-sized digital file is included with our compliments. For smaller portraits, a web-sized file can be purchased for a fee. We do not provide files for printing, as we control the quality of every heirloom by handling all printing and finishing in-house.

Why is there a dress code?

We encourage clients to dress in an elegant and dignified manner because a timeless heirloom will be compared to other formal portraits over the decades. The goal is to consider how you wish to be remembered for generations to come.

Do you charge a session fee?

Never. Your investment begins only when you select a portrait to purchase.

Do I need to measure my walls before the session?

It’s a great idea. It helps in our projection session, where we visualize the portrait in your space. We can even work from a simple photo of your wall to simulate the final placement and ensure the size is perfect for you.

My home is contemporary. Will your traditional frames work?

Yes. A true fine art portrait is comfortable in any setting because its subject matter gives it an artistic license that transcends decor styles. It will outlive your current furniture and home. While we specialize in museum-grade traditional frames, we also offer contemporary options. Our only goal is to delight you.

How long do the prints last?

This depends on the medium and location. Our archival canvas prints are crafted to last for over 200 years indoors. For public art installations, we can print on durable substrates like “Gorilla Glass” for maximum longevity and vandalism resistance.

What is a print license?

For public or large-scale commercial installations, we sell a print license for the specific use, then charge a percentage of the installation costs. The license is perpetual but requires a new fee if the print is ever replaced.

Are smaller versions available?

Yes. We create limited editions in smaller sizes to support a grand-scale work or as part of a larger collection strategy. We also create smaller, unlimited editions as well.
